Some people will use their pool covers to have more safety

To help improve child safety and increase drowning prevention, a lot of people will keep their pool covered when not in use. A safety pool cover should be strong. At least being able to support the weight of an adult.

There are many types of safety pool covers.

Some come in manual varieties that you pull by hand. Others are the automatic types that unroll or remove the blanket by you simply pressing a button. Some electric pool covers even come with remote controls for convenience. Remember though, these motorized covers are a lot more expensive compared to their manual counterparts.

Drowning -
Drowning under the age of 15 is the second leading cause of injury and death in the USA.. The number one cause of death of unintentional injury of unintentional injury death of children 1 to 4 years of age.

  • The majority of drowning incidents have occurred while the child's supervisor assumed the child was safely indoors.
  • 67% of all drowning accidents occur in backyard spas, pools and bathtubs.
  • A child can drown in less time than it takes to answer the telephone.
    A child can drown in as little as 5-8cm of water in as little as 30 seconds.
  • Children less than 5 years of age and young people aged 15 to 24 years have the highest drowning rates.
  • For every child who drowns, four children are hospitalized for near-drowning.
  • One third of those removed from water after a near-drowning are comatose on admission, survive but suffer significant neurological impairment. Irreversible brain damage may occur after 3-5 minutes.
  • The annual cost of care per year in a chronic care facility for an impaired survivor of a near-drowning event is approximately
    $100 000.
